Chapter 25 - THE MECHANIC'S GAMBIT

The next morning, David walked into Dr. Evans’ office carrying the brace.

Evans looked up, clearly annoyed. “I thought you stormed out to get a second opinion.”

“I took it to my shop,” David said, dropping the heavy titanium mechanism on the doctor’s desk. “I ran a metallurgical stress test on it. And then I pulled the original patent files for this specific hinge model.”

Evans frowned, picking up the brace. “And?”

“The factory locking pin is made of standard 304 stainless steel,” David lied flawlessly, utilizing every ounce of technical jargon he knew. “But the housing is a hardened titanium alloy. Over three years of repetitive, load-bearing friction, the titanium housing naturally shears the softer steel pin. It creates an internal wear mark that forces the hinge to reverse its trajectory.”

Evans stared at him. “You’re suggesting a factory defect?”

“I’m suggesting a critical design flaw,” David corrected, leaning over the desk. “A flaw that has actively prevented my daughter from healing for three years. A flaw that your clinic missed, despite prescribing this exact model.”

Evans swallowed hard. The implication was clear. Medical malpractice. A massive lawsuit against both the manufacturer and the prescribing clinic.

“I’m not looking to sue,” David said softly, recognizing the fear in the doctor's eyes. “But Lily doesn't need this brace anymore. In fact, she’s going to make a miraculous recovery starting today. And the insurance company is going to sign off on a final, lump-sum settlement for the prolonged suffering caused by this defective equipment. You are going to write the medical justification for that settlement.”

Evans looked at the filed-down pin. He knew David was bluffing about the natural friction. But he also knew a public trial would destroy his practice.

Evans reached for his pen. “I’ll draft the paperwork.”
