Chapter 11 - ARYA DIDN’T LET HER MOTHER BACK IN

The review findings broke Celeste more effectively than blame would have.
She apologized.
Arya accepted the apology.
She still did not move home.
That confused Celeste until Hannah Price explained the difference.
“Forgiveness is not restoration of access.”
So Celeste stayed away from therapy unless invited.
She stopped checking the rehab portal.
Stopped messaging Maya.
Stopped asking the driver how Arya walked between appointments.
The silence felt intolerable.
That was exactly why she needed to practice it.
Arya, meanwhile, progressed unevenly.
After eight weeks, she could stand for short periods in a less restrictive brace without gripping both crutches.
After twelve, she began taking supervised steps with one forearm crutch.
Then she developed severe calf pain from muscles suddenly being asked to work differently.
Training paused.
Arya panicked.
“This is it. I messed it up.”
Maya sent her for imaging.
Nothing had torn.
The muscles were overloaded.
Rest, adjust, rebuild.
Arya hated the setback more than the original weakness because now she had expectations.
Rowan visited the clinic that week to drop off revised hand controls for her car.
He found her sitting alone outside.
“I thought I was getting better.”
“You are.”
“I’m back on two crutches.”
“And?”
“That means I went backward.”
Rowan sat beside her.
“Cars don’t heal, so this analogy will be bad.”
“That has never stopped you.”
He smiled.
“If I change an alignment and a tire starts wearing differently, I don’t declare the car ruined. I ask what the new load is doing.”
Arya stared at him.
“You make everything sound mechanical.”
“I’m a mechanic.”
“That doesn’t answer emotional problems.”
“Nope.”
She laughed.
Then Celeste arrived unexpectedly.
Arya’s face closed.
Celeste stopped twenty feet away.
“I came because Maya said you asked for your insurance binder.”
“I asked Aunt Lena.”
“I know. She forgot it at my house.”
Celeste placed the binder on a bench and walked away.
No questions.
No advice.
No attempt to hug her.
Arya watched her leave.

That small act did more for their relationship than every apology had.
Because Celeste finally proved she could see danger, discomfort, and uncertainty without immediately taking control.
