Chapter 20 - THE ACCUSATION

David carried Lily upstairs and laid her on her bed. He wrapped an ice pack in a towel and placed it gently over her knee.
When Claire finally came home, dropping grocery bags on the kitchen counter, David was waiting for her. He had placed the bank printouts on the kitchen island, right next to the modified titanium brace.
Claire stopped. “What is this?”
“It’s a timeline,” David said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “A timeline of you keeping our daughter crippled.”
Claire stared at him, the color draining from her face. “Are you insane? What are you talking about?”
“The hinge is filed down, Claire. By a rotary tool. It forces her leg backward. And look at this—” He slammed his finger onto the bank statement. “Twelve hundred dollars a month, siphoned out into an account under your maiden name. You’re mutilating her for a paycheck!”
Claire’s eyes widened. She looked from the brace to the paper, and then, inexplicably, she let out a harsh, bitter laugh.
“You think I did this?” she shouted, her voice echoing off the tile. “You think I took that money for myself?”
“It has your initials on it!”
“It’s a payment to Cedar Mountain Hospice, David!” she screamed, tears springing to her eyes. “For your father! The father you refused to put in a state facility when we went broke! I’ve been secretly paying his premium for two years so you wouldn’t have to pull the plug on him!”
David froze. The anger in his chest turned to ice.
“Call them,” Claire challenged, sliding her phone across the counter. “Call Cedar Mountain. Ask them who pays the bill.”
David didn’t touch the phone. He looked at the altered brace.
