Chapter 8 - HE EXPECTED SOMEONE ELSE TO FIND THEM

Dean had scheduled a text message.

That was the detail that changed the timeline.

At 2:36 p.m.—three minutes after he returned to the parking lot—his phone automatically sent Janice:

CALL ME. RACHEL LEFT THE KIDS IN THE CAR AND SOMEBODY BROKE THE WINDOW.

Janice received it.

She later confirmed she called immediately.

The message had been created at 1:58 p.m.

Before the family arrived at the fair.

Dean scheduled a description of an event that had not yet happened.

Rachel stopped reading.

Olivia continued.

A second scheduled message was saved but canceled automatically when Dean interacted with the phone:

THE POLICE ARE HERE. SHE’S LOSING IT.

Created at 1:59 p.m.

Scheduled for 2:45.

Dean expected police.

He expected a window issue.

He expected to blame Rachel.

The only thing he could not control was timing.

I found the SUV too early.

That was my role.

An accident.

I had stopped because Emily looked distressed.

If I had kept walking, Dean might have had more time.

How much?

Nobody knew.

Maybe he planned to return after several minutes, unlock the vehicle, and claim Rachel had abandoned the children.

Maybe he believed air conditioning would somehow remain tolerable longer than it did.

Maybe he simply underestimated heat.

The prosecution did not need to prove he intended serious physical injury to establish that he intentionally created danger.

Then Rachel remembered the drive to the fair.

Dean insisted on using his SUV rather than hers.

He had pre-cooled it aggressively.

He told her:

“The twins can nap while you grab the bands.”

He volunteered to wait outside.

Every step positioned him as the responsible parent.

Until the moment he wasn’t there.

Rachel asked me months later:

“What if you hadn’t stopped?”

I had asked myself too.

There was no answer worth living inside.

So I said:

“I did.”

May you like

She nodded.

That became enough.
