Chapter 4 - THE ORANGE WRISTBAND

Fair records gave investigators something Dean did not expect.
The orange band around his wrist was not a generic admission bracelet.
It was a vendor re-entry band.
Dean’s company had an equipment display near the agricultural pavilion.
Each time exhibitors passed through the restricted gate, staff scanned a code on the band.
Timestamped.
Rachel entered the fair at 2:11 p.m.
She had gone inside to pick up wristbands for the children because Dean said he would wait with them in the air-conditioned SUV.
At 2:14, Dean’s exhibitor band was scanned entering through another gate.
Rachel still believed he was with the children.
He had left the SUV.
At 2:16, Emily appeared on a parking-lot camera beside the vehicle.
Alone.
At 2:18, I entered the frame.
At 2:21, I called 911.
At 2:29, the window was broken.
At 2:33, Dean’s band scanned exiting the fair.
Then he ran toward us.
His story had been:
He went inside searching for Rachel after Emily returned unexpectedly.
The scan data proved he entered before Emily appeared outside.
That alone did not explain why.
Then investigators reviewed vehicle data.
The SUV recorded remote locking events.
At 2:13 p.m.:
Rear doors locked.
At 2:14:
Driver door opened.
At 2:14 and thirty-eight seconds:
All doors locked using the second key fob.
Dean’s.
Emily later explained.
Daddy told her to stay in the vehicle.
Then he stepped out.
Emily opened the door before the final lock.
She thought he was going to the trunk.
Dean saw her outside.
“He got mad?”
The interviewer asked.
Emily nodded.
“He said I had to stay and watch the boys because Mom was being selfish.”
Then Dean locked the SUV with the twins still strapped inside.
He walked toward the fair.
Emily stayed.
Because she had been told to watch her brothers.
That explained why she refused shade.
Why she kicked the doors instead of running for help.
Why she kept saying please.
She believed leaving the SUV meant abandoning Noah and Caleb.
Dean had used a seven-year-old girl’s sense of responsibility to keep her standing beside a dangerous situation he created.
The question was no longer:
Why did he forget his children?
May you like
It was:
What did he expect to happen while he was inside?
