Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO WOULD NOT STAY MISSING

Linda Shelton was found the next day in a shuttered produce warehouse near Tolleson.

Alive.

Barely conscious.

Tied to a metal chair.

Drugged.

A warehouse employee making an unauthorized visit to retrieve personal tools heard banging from behind a partition wall and called 911.

By the time Prescott informed Desmond, the police were already at County General speaking with her physicians. Her injuries were consistent with restraint, dehydration, and heavy sedation. She had a split lip, bruised wrists, and two fractured fingers.

Toby didn’t fully understand the medical language.

He understood the words alive and hospital.

That was enough to send him into tears so violent he couldn’t speak.

Desmond drove him there with Prescott in the back seat dictating instructions to two separate lawyers and one police liaison.

At the hospital, Linda looked impossibly small in the white bed.

When Toby entered, she lifted one shaking hand and whispered, “Baby.”

He ran to her side, pressed his face into the blanket near her shoulder, and sobbed with the full relief only children can produce — loud, helpless, unembarrassed.

Desmond stood near the door feeling like an intruder in a moment he did not deserve to witness.

Linda saw him over Toby’s head.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Not warmth either.

Something more difficult.

Recognition.

“Desmond.”

“I’m sorry,” he said before anything else.

She closed her eyes for a second.

“This is not the time for old apologies.”

Detective Maren Ortiz interviewed Linda later that afternoon after Toby had been coaxed into the hall with crackers and juice.

Linda identified Paul Gomez immediately.

She also said something that made every legal strategy in the room feel smaller.

“Celeste came herself first.”

Desmond went still.

“Where?”

“At my apartment. Two months ago.”

“What did she want?”

“She wanted proof Toby was yours. She said if I cooperated, she’d set us up somewhere comfortable and quiet. If I didn’t, I’d regret being difficult.”

“And when you refused?”

Linda looked at her bandaged hands.

“She said some children disappear from poor neighborhoods every day and nobody important notices.”

Detective Ortiz wrote without expression, but Desmond saw her jaw tighten.

Then Linda delivered the sentence that turned the case sharply again.

“She didn’t just want Toby found,” Linda said. “She wanted him unavailable until after your board vote.”

Prescott, standing near the window, slowly closed his eyes.

Because that meant Celeste’s plan had never depended only on Desmond dying.

May you like

It also depended on Toby not existing in time to matter.

And now, with Linda alive to say so, the entire trust war had just become easier to prove — if the DNA results arrived in time.
