Chapter 11 - THE MARRIAGE THAT COLLAPSED IN COURT

Once the DNA became admissible, Celeste’s strategy began to crumble.
Prescott filed three things in one morning:
a formal acknowledgment and paternity petition on Desmond’s behalf,
a trust activation notice preserving Toby’s beneficial interest,
and an emergency petition to freeze any spousal-control claims by Celeste pending investigation into attempted murder, kidnapping conspiracy, and fraudulent interference with corporate governance.
Celeste finally appeared in person at the next hearing.
She wore cream again, as if innocence were a color she believed could still help her. Her attorney argued that Desmond was exploiting a “suddenly discovered child” to avoid scrutiny over his disappearance and corporate failures.
Then Detective Ortiz testified.
Paul Gomez’s truck.
The cut brake line.
Phone records showing twelve calls between Celeste and Paul in the forty-eight hours before the sabotage.
Linda Shelton’s statement.
And, most devastating of all, a prepaid phone found in the warehouse with voice memos in Paul’s own gruff mutter about “keeping the woman quiet until after Friday” and “the boy ruining everything.”
The judge extended the restraining orders immediately.
Outside the courthouse, media exploded.

BOARD WAR TURNS INTO CRIMINAL CASE
Victor issued a public statement distancing the company from Celeste’s “personal actions.”
Nobody important believed he was uninvolved anymore.
Meanwhile, Desmond logged into the Korean signing remotely from Prescott’s conference room, with outside counsel and two independent directors witnessing. The investors, alarmed but pragmatic, signed after receiving additional governance guarantees and a representation that Victor’s board bloc would lose emergency control.
The deal was done.
The company remained alive.
Yet none of that felt as immediate to Desmond as the sight of Toby asleep on Prescott’s sofa that night with one hand still wrapped around the edge of a blanket, as though his body did not yet believe safety could last until morning.
Desmond could stop a hostile board.
He could fund lawyers and private investigators.

He could not speed up a child’s nervous system.
And that, more than any corporate consequence, began teaching him what his actual responsibilities looked like.
