Chapter 8 - THE TEST THAT CHANGED THE AIR

The emergency hearing took place in Maricopa County Superior Court just after sunrise.

Desmond wore a navy suit borrowed from one of Prescott’s garment bags because he hadn’t returned home long enough to change properly in two days. Toby wore a clean plaid shirt Marta had bought him from Target the night before.

Prescott presented the case carefully.

Attempted sabotage of Desmond’s vehicle.

Credible evidence that the child Toby Shelton had overheard the plot.

A missing mother, Linda Shelton, believed taken against her will.

A dormant trust issue requiring preservation of the child’s identity and safety.

And, most importantly, a request for expedited DNA testing plus temporary protective orders barring Celeste Kincaid and known associate Paul Gomez from contact with Toby pending the investigation.

Celeste’s attorney appeared remotely and objected to everything.

He accused Desmond of manufacturing a paternity narrative under pressure and exploiting a vulnerable minor for control of a board vote.

The judge, a woman in her sixties with little patience for theater, asked a single sharp question:

“If the wife has no connection to this child, why did her name appear in the police report tied to the alleged sabotage witness?”

No good answer followed.

The judge granted the expedited testing and the protective order.

By noon, Desmond and Toby were in a discreet medical office having cheek swabs taken.

Toby sat very still through the process.

Afterward, while the technician sealed the envelopes, he asked, “If it comes back that you’re my dad, does that mean I have to call you that?”

Desmond almost laughed and almost broke at the same time.

“No.”

“Good.”

“Because you don’t want to?”

Toby considered the question seriously.

“Because I don’t know you.”

That was fair.

On the drive back, Prescott received another call.

The police had found Paul Gomez’s truck on the edge of Apache Junction, abandoned.

Inside were bolt cutters, gloves, a prepaid phone, and a receipt for industrial sedatives purchased through a veterinary supplier.

Linda Shelton had deepened from missing-person case to likely kidnapping victim.

That night Desmond did something he had not done in years.

He sat awake without screens, meetings, or a driver waiting.

Only Toby, asleep two rooms away at Prescott’s house, and the unbearable possibility that the child who had saved his life might also be the son he never knew existed.

The DNA results were promised within twenty-four hours.

And Desmond understood that no matter what they said, the next part of his life had already begun.
