Chapter 6 - LAURA’S SISTER STOPPED PROTECTING BEN

Julia Mercer was Laura’s older sister.
She loved Ben.
She was also furious with him.
“You should have told me about the messages.”
They were standing in her Cedar Rapids kitchen while Avery slept upstairs.
Ben had been released from the hospital that afternoon, but child-protection workers recommended Avery remain with Julia for several more days while a home-safety plan was completed.
Ben looked exhausted.
“I didn’t want Laura’s family panicking every time some anonymous account sent garbage.”
“You didn’t want us questioning your judgment.”
“That too.”
At least he admitted it.
Julia folded her arms.
“Laura was terrified of Caleb until the day she died.”
Ben looked away.
That sentence caught Detective Ellison’s attention.
“You thought Caleb was still a danger?”
Julia laughed bitterly.
“He sent letters from prison.”
Ben’s head snapped toward her.
“What letters?”
Now it was Julia’s turn to look guilty.
Laura had received three.
She hid them from Ben.
Julia knew because Laura showed her.
The first blamed Laura for Caleb’s conviction.
The second claimed he had forgiven her.
The third said:
ONE DAY AVERY WILL LEARN WHAT YOU DID.
“Why didn’t either of you report them?”
“Laura said they were screened prison mail. She thought Caleb wanted a reaction.”
Everyone in that family, Ellison thought, had been protecting somebody from fear by hiding pieces of the truth.
The result was that nobody had the whole danger picture.
Julia went upstairs and returned carrying an old banker’s box Laura had left with her shortly before beginning cancer treatment.
Inside were tax records, medical bills, photographs—and a spiral notebook.
Laura’s journal.
She had written about Caleb during the pregnancy.
His jealousy.
His threats.
His obsession with proving that people belonged to him.
And one entry mentioned the missing flash drive.
I copied the voicemails and the financial stuff Caleb made me hide. Ben doesn’t know everything yet. Someday Avery may need proof that leaving him was not betrayal.
Detective Ellison reread the sentence.
“What financial stuff?”
Julia shook her head.
“No idea.”
The case had just gained another layer.
Caleb had not come back only because he believed Avery belonged to him.

There was something Laura had preserved years earlier.
And Caleb had spent two days tearing through a child’s bedroom trying to find it.
