Chapter 5 - WHAT “AGAIN” REALLY MEANT
Avery’s forensic interview took place in a child advocacy center, not a police station.
No uniforms in the room.
No leading questions.
No demand that she tell a complete story on command.
A trained interviewer named Megan Cole began with school, cartoons, and Avery’s favorite breakfast before asking about the night she called 911.
Avery explained that Caleb arrived while she was at school.
When she came home, he told her Ben had gotten sick.
He made macaroni for dinner.
He knew where the plates were.
That frightened her more than if he had acted like a stranger.
“He said he used to live with Mommy,” Avery said.
“What did he want you to call him?”
“Daddy.”
“And what happened if you didn’t?”
Avery picked at the sleeve of her sweater.
“He got the snake.”
Caleb owned the python. He had brought it in a travel enclosure.
The first night, when Avery cried and asked for Ben, Caleb set the open enclosure beside her bed.
“He said snakes know when kids scream.”
That was false.
The fear was not.
The next morning, Caleb closed the enclosure and behaved almost normally. He made pancakes. Let Avery watch television. Told her they were “starting over.”
Then she asked where Ben was.
He moved the terrarium back beside the bed.
That was why she had said again.
The snake had become a punishment.
Not because Caleb expected it to attack her.
Because he had discovered it frightened her enough to make her quiet.
Then the interviewer asked whether Caleb had searched for anything.
Avery nodded.
“Mommy’s box.”
The plastic container from beneath her bed.
“What was he looking for?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he find it?”
“He got mad.”
“Why?”
“Because something wasn’t there.”
That matched the missing flash drive.
But Avery remembered one additional detail.
Caleb had looked through Laura’s photographs, then held up a picture of Laura and Avery taken shortly before Laura died.
“He said Mommy ruined his whole life.”
“What did you say?”
“I said Mommy was nice.”
Avery’s voice became smaller.
“He said I didn’t know who Mommy really was.”
Then she added:
“He said Ben stole me.”
The investigation suddenly had two motives.

And he wanted Avery to believe the father who raised her was the criminal.
