Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO WAITED SEVEN YEARS
Rebecca Voss lived ninety miles away in Dubuque.
She had spent seven years waiting for Caleb to become somebody else.
He never did.
The major twist was not that Caleb was Avery’s biological father. By then, everyone knew that.
It was that Caleb’s own sister had quietly helped Laura escape him—and had been protecting the evidence ever since.
Three earlier details finally aligned.
Laura’s journal said someone outside the Collins family knew about the flash drive.
Caleb’s licensing board received an anonymous complaint soon after he began rebuilding his professional identity.
And Caleb had been obsessed with locating not just Laura’s copy of the evidence, but proving she had “conspired” against him.
Rebecca was the missing person in that conspiracy.
Except it wasn’t a conspiracy.
It was protection.
Years earlier, Caleb had called Rebecca after Laura left him and demanded she tell him where Laura was staying. Rebecca refused. When she later learned Laura was pregnant, she helped pay for a hotel under another name and connected her to a domestic-violence advocate.
Caleb never forgave her.
When Laura finally gathered enough evidence to seek court protection, Rebecca gave investigators copies of Caleb’s financial messages.
Then she disappeared from the family’s life.
“I thought if I stayed away, he’d stop using me to find them,” Rebecca told Detective Ellison.
He did.
For years.
Then Caleb applied for his contractor license.
Rebecca saw his new company advertised online.
She checked the application.
He had denied the past again.
So she sent the anonymous complaint.
“I didn’t know Laura was dead,” Rebecca said. “And I didn’t know he knew where Avery lived.”
She started crying.
“If I had known—”
Ellison stopped her.
The attack belonged to Caleb.
Not to the person who told the truth about him.
But the revelation created immediate damage.
Caleb’s defense now claimed Rebecca had spent years persecuting him and had manipulated Laura, Ben, and even the state licensing board.
Rebecca would have to testify.
Her old emails would become evidence.
Her name would become public.
And Avery would eventually learn that one member of Caleb’s family had been protecting her from a distance since before she was born.
When Ben told Julia, she sat down slowly.
“All these years we thought his whole family looked away.”
“They didn’t.”
