Chapter 27 - THE DAY SHE WORE BLUE

For her eighty-third birthday, Sophie brought Mom a garment bag.

Inside was a simple midnight-blue jacket made by the apprentices.

Every seam had been finished by hand.

The covered buttons were slightly larger so Mom could manage them.

A hidden magnetic closure allowed her to wear the jacket even on painful days.

“I cannot accept this,” Mom said.

“It was made from practice fabric,” Sophie lied badly.

Mom examined the stitching.

“Practice fabric does not receive silk lining.”

The apprentices emerged from the hallway carrying cake.

Mom began crying.

She had spent her life making clothes other people wore to important occasions.

Few people had ever made anything for her.

Inside the jacket, a label listed every apprentice.

At the bottom were the words:

For Evelyn, who taught our hands to remember.

Mom wore it to the store’s anniversary celebration.

As she entered, employees greeted her by name.

Not because somebody whispered her identity first.

Not because a hidden label had proven her worth.

They knew her.

She paused beside the place where security once stood.

Marcus Lee, now a security supervisor, smiled.

“That color suits you.”

“I know.”

She walked toward the gown.

Visitors moved aside—not because she appeared powerful, but because they recognized a person whose story had changed the room.

Mom placed her hand against the display glass.

Then she looked at her reflection beside the gown.

For once, she was not outside her own history.

She stood inside it.

Wearing blue.
