Chapter 25 - THE DRESS SOPHIE DESIGNED

For the fellowship’s final project, Sophie designed a modern midnight-blue gown inspired by the 1984 original.

She changed the high collar into a softer neckline.

The back used accessible magnetic closures beneath decorative covered buttons.

The waist could adjust without altering the outer silhouette.

The design honored history without copying it.

She asked Mom to supervise construction.

“No,” Mom said.

Sophie looked devastated.

Then Mom continued.

“I will advise. You will supervise.”

The apprentices divided the work.

Each person’s name appeared on the production card from the beginning.

No one was called merely the workroom.

During the fitting, a seam pulled at the left shoulder.

Sophie froze.

Mom smiled.

“Now you understand.”

They corrected the pattern together.

At the waist, Sophie added reinforcement based on Mom’s original technique.

Inside the lining, every contributor stitched a name.

At the center, Sophie left a blank space.

“That belongs to you,” she told Mom.

“My hands cannot manage those letters.”

“They don’t need to.”

Using a large needle and a guide, Mom stitched only one character.

E.

Sophie completed the rest beside it.

E. Morrow — Teacher

The gown debuted at the fellowship showcase.

The model was a wheelchair user from the first apprentice class.

She moved beneath the lights with ease.

The closures worked.

The skirt flowed without tangling.

Mom watched from the front row.

When the audience stood, she remained seated because her knee hurt.

Nobody mistook sitting for weakness.

The applause was not for an old story alone.

It was for what the old story had made possible.
