Chapter 8 - THE MORNING I LEARNED WHY ELENA WAS WATCHINGA few days later, Elena told me the truth about why she had cameras pointed toward Clare’s side gate in the first place.

It wasn’t paranoia.

It was experience.

When her divorce started, Vanessa and Samantha had involved themselves immediately. Friendly coffee. Friendly questions. Friendly offers to “help” with paperwork. Weeks later, Elena discovered that someone had photographed financial envelopes left in her mailbox and repeated private details about her settlement around the neighborhood.

After that, she installed exterior cameras.

Then came the bigger discovery.

One night, Elena overheard Vanessa on speakerphone talking to a man she assumed was a RidgeMark representative.

“He’s in the blue house now,” Vanessa said. “If he settles in, we’ll lose leverage.”

At the time, Elena didn’t know who “he” was.

Then she saw me moving boxes into the blue house.

“That’s when I started watching the watchers,” she said.

I was quiet for a long moment.

“Why help me?”

She shrugged slightly.

“Because I know what it feels like when respectable people build a story around you and expect everyone else to nod.”

That was the closest thing to vulnerability she had shown me.

In return, I told her about the city job I’d lost.

A rebranding contract collapsed. My employer cut staff. Rent ate my savings. Pride did the rest.

“I thought I came here to disappear for a while,” I admitted.

Elena looked at the blue house.

“Funny. They’re trying to disappear you too.”

The more time we spent going through records and hearing notices, the clearer one thing became:

the development deal was real,

the women’s money problems were real,

and Clare’s use of her dead husband’s watch was not impulsive.

It was a message.

If I fought back, she was willing to weaponize anything.

That night, Detective Pike called.

“We found a draft purchase map in Vanessa’s email,” he said.

“Whose house was highlighted first?”

May you like

He was quiet for half a second.

“Yours.”
