Chapter 2 - THE VIDEO THEY THOUGHT DIDN’T EXISTNobody in the kitchen moved.

Not Clare.

Not Samantha.

Not Vanessa.

Not even the officer.

The television continued playing.

The footage came from outside Clare’s kitchen window, but the angle was clear enough. I was under the sink with both hands around the fitting. Clare glanced toward the window, crouched, and slipped the watch into my toolbox. Then she straightened just before I backed out from under the cabinet.

The officer’s face hardened.

Vanessa lunged for the remote.

Elena caught her wrist first.

“Let it play.”

It did.

The next clip showed the three women standing beside Vanessa’s car at 10:12 that morning. The audio wasn’t perfect, but it was enough.

Samantha’s voice came through first.

“He’ll never beat all three of us.”

Then Vanessa:

“Keep the times tight. Don’t ramble.”

Finally Clare, shaky but unmistakable:

“If he just confesses, nobody has to push this further.”

The officer picked up Vanessa’s phone from the counter.

“Ma’am, stop recording.”

“I have a right—”

“You have a right to remain quiet too.”

That shut her up.

He turned to me. “Mr. Mercer, you are not under arrest.”

Then he turned to the three women.

“None of you are to leave until another officer arrives.”

Clare sank into a chair.

“It isn’t what it looks like.”

Elena gave her a cold look. “That sentence is always a waste of time.”

I finally unlocked my own phone and opened the time-stamped photos from that afternoon.

4:07 p.m. — faucet under Clare’s sink before repair.

4:18 p.m. — the replaced fitting.

4:23 p.m. — my closed toolbox on Clare’s kitchen floor.

Then I showed another set.

3:31 p.m. — Samantha’s loose porch rail, repaired.

2:52 p.m. — Vanessa’s so-called broken cabinet hinge that had not been broken at all.

The officer compared the times to the reports on the counter and let out a long breath.

“These statements are impossible.”

Clare lifted both hands like she was surrendering to bad weather.

“We only wanted to scare him.”

“By filing false police reports?” he asked.

Samantha snapped, “You don’t understand.”

“No,” he said. “I understand perfectly.”

Within fifteen minutes, two more officers arrived.

The kitchen that had almost sent me to jail became a crime scene of another kind. Phones were collected. The false reports were bagged. Vanessa’s face turned flat and furious. Samantha started crying the instant handcuffs were mentioned. Clare asked twice for water and once for sympathy.

Nobody gave her any.

When I stepped out onto the porch, Elena followed me.

I looked at her.

“You saved me.”

She shook her head.

May you like

“I interrupted them.”

That was the first clue that she knew this wasn’t over.
