Chapter 4 - THE FIRST THING I TOOK BACK
Evelyn advised me to move carefully.
I wanted Vanessa out of the guesthouse immediately.
Legally, it wasn’t as simple as changing locks while their belongings remained there, so we served written termination of their occupancy agreement and began the proper process.
I revoked every permission Daniel had to access trust records.
I changed the boathouse locks.
I notified the county recorder that no deed, easement, mortgage, or development option involving Hale property was authorized without verification through Evelyn.
And I filed a formal dispute with First County Bank.
Those were practical steps.
The emotional decision was harder.
I agreed to a forensic review.
That meant handing strangers six months of family finances and letting them examine whether my son had helped his wife steal from me.
The accountant was Maya Chen.
She asked Daniel to identify every entity connected to Briar Point.
He named three.
There were five.
One of the missing two was VH Hospitality Concepts LLC.
Vanessa owned it.
The other was DHL Advisory.
Daniel owned that one.
Over four months, a Chicago developer called Kessler Urban Partners had transferred $180,000 in “predevelopment retainers” to those entities.
Daniel received $90,000.
Vanessa received $90,000.
I stared at him.
“You were paid to sell land you didn’t own.”
“It was consulting money.”
“For what?”
He couldn’t answer.
That afternoon, I stopped defending him in my own head.
Daniel was not simply trapped by Vanessa.
He had chosen greed before he chose fear.
That mattered.
But Maya found something else in VH Hospitality’s records.
Three weeks after the first developer payment, Vanessa paid a private physician in Milwaukee $4,500.
Not for medical treatment.
The invoice description read:
capacity consultation / family asset planning.
Evelyn stared at it.
“Whose capacity?”
Nobody needed to say my name.
