Chapter 8 - I Chose to Reopen My Childhood

Rachel warned me that using the old evidence could make my childhood part of a public criminal proceeding.

Defense attorneys might challenge memory.

Reporters could find the divorce.

My father’s name could surface.

“You do not have to become the prosecution’s history lesson,” she told me.

I thought about Hunter asking whether Grandma could reach him inside a hospital.

“If the old pattern explains the new one, use it.”

That was my irreversible decision.

I signed releases.

Morales contacted the retired social worker from my parents’ case.

She was eighty now and initially remembered almost nothing.

Then she saw the old case number.

“I remember the mother,” she said.

She also remembered something absent from the official file.

She had expressed concerns about coaching.

But standards were different then, the family was already in litigation, and the therapist Evelyn selected strongly supported her version.

“I should have pushed harder,” the woman said.

That sentence repeated itself through the whole case.

Neighbor.

Teacher.

Social worker.

Sister.

Me.

Everyone had a moment when they could have pushed harder.

Evelyn survived inside those hesitations.

My employer called during the same week.

The Seattle promotion was formally going to someone else.

They offered me a lateral Phoenix role with less travel.

I accepted.

It hurt.

It also meant I could be home for school pickups.

Nate’s deployment command extended his emergency leave, then arranged a stateside temporary assignment while Hunter recovered.

We had been divorced for three years, but for the first time since the hospital call, I felt as though there were two adults holding up our son instead of one.

That mattered.

Then Thomas Hale called me.

Morales had not contacted him.

Bertha had.

He left one voicemail.

“Abigail, I heard Hunter was hurt. I don’t know what you’ve been told or what you want from me. I’m not going to force myself into your life. I just want you to know I’m here.”

I listened once.

Then again.

I did not call back.

Not yet.

Because Part 9 belonged to Hunter.

And Hunter finally remembered why the beating became so much worse that night.
