Chapter 13 - The Case Was Built Without Making Hunter Perform
Prosecutors did not need Hunter to stand in front of Evelyn and accuse her.
That mattered more to me than any sentence.
The case rested on ordinary, verifiable pieces:
hospital records establishing injury timing;
neighbor testimony;
photographs of the shed;
fingerprints on the laminated cards and tripod;
deleted cloud images recovered from Bertha;
anonymous hotline reports linked through account and phone records;
the draft guardianship petition;
Hunter’s properly conducted forensic interview;
and Bertha’s cooperation supported by evidence that existed before she began talking.
The historical tapes were used carefully.
They demonstrated a longstanding coaching pattern but did not become an excuse to prosecute an entire twenty-five-year family history through one modern case.
Thomas was interviewed.
He did not testify publicly because the plea eliminated the need.
I was grateful.
By the time Evelyn was sentenced, Hunter could walk normally again.
His wrist had healed.
The rib injuries no longer hurt when he laughed.
The psychological injuries were harder.
He hated closed doors.
He refused to stay with babysitters.
Every time my work phone rang after dark, he asked whether I was leaving.
We worked on that slowly.
“Mom always comes back,” became something I proved through routine instead of promises.
Same pickup time.
Calendar on the refrigerator.
Video call if I had a late meeting.
No surprises.
My company formally moved me into the Phoenix role permanently. Less travel. Less prestige.
More life.
I stopped thinking of that as losing.
Nate received reassignment to San Diego after deployment, close enough to become a real weekly parent again instead of a face on a screen.
We rewrote our custody schedule around Hunter’s therapy.
For the first time since our divorce, neither of us treated flexibility like surrender.
Trauma had not repaired our marriage.
