Chapter 5 - What Vanessa Had Been Asking Lily

Daniel spent the next week learning how much of his own household he had failed to see.

Lily’s pediatrician treated the pneumonia and referred her to a child therapist because she refused to sleep near an exterior door.

During the first session, Lily mentioned something Daniel did not know.

Vanessa had been conducting “practice questions.”

“What questions?”

Daniel asked afterward, careful not to press Lily beyond what the therapist recommended.

Lily stared at her sneakers.

“Who makes dinner more?”

“Who helps with homework?”

“Who gets angry?”

“Who would you pick if a judge asked?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa had been preparing their daughter for a custody dispute before Daniel even knew there was going to be one.

Rachel cautioned him not to overstate it.

“Parents sometimes discuss separation badly without committing legal misconduct. We need to distinguish bad judgment from a deliberate setup.”

That distinction mattered to Daniel.

He did not want a story in which every unpleasant memory magically became evidence.

Then Diane’s first formal statement arrived.

She admitted taking Lily’s backpack.

Her explanation was that Vanessa called saying Lily was “running away” and Diane wanted to keep the bag safe until the child calmed down.

“Why didn’t she take Lily?” Daniel asked.

Rachel read the next paragraph.

“Diane claims Vanessa told her you were about to arrive and needed to see Lily outside for yourself.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I was already home.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel had been behind the house boarding windows and securing patio furniture. Vanessa knew that.

Rachel leaned back.

“If Diane is telling the truth, Vanessa wanted you to discover Lily outside.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know yet.”

The first hidden truth surfaced that evening through Vanessa’s sister Claire.

Claire called again.

This time she wasn’t angry.

“Daniel, did Vanessa tell you about the Portland apartment?”

He said nothing.

“I’ll take that as no.”

Vanessa had put down a deposit on a two-bedroom apartment near Beaverton three weeks earlier.

Her prospective employer had offered her a senior marketing position starting in six weeks.

“She told us you’d come around,” Claire said. “She said once there was evidence Lily wasn’t safe staying with you, you wouldn’t have a choice.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Evidence of what?”

Claire was silent long enough that he nearly repeated himself.

“Neglect,” she finally said.

Daniel looked toward Lily’s closed bedroom door.

The storm had not interrupted Vanessa’s relocation plan.

It had become part of it.
