Chapter 3 - The Backpack That Wasn’t Lost

Lily woke late that morning.

She asked for water first.

Then she asked whether Vanessa was still there.

Daniel told her no.

Her shoulders relaxed.

That reaction hurt almost as much as finding her beside the mailbox.

Melanie interviewed Lily without Daniel answering for her. The questions were simple and open.

What happened before you went outside?

What did your mother say?

Where was your backpack?

Lily remembered more than Daniel expected.

She had come home from school complaining that her throat hurt. Vanessa gave her medicine and told her to pack clothes into her school backpack.

“Why?”

Lily twisted the silver bracelet around her wrist.

“Mom said we were practicing.”

“Practicing what?”

“Leaving Dad.”

Daniel felt something drop inside him.

Lily continued.

Vanessa had spent weeks asking where Lily wanted to live if “Mommy and Daddy stopped being together.”

Lily always answered Lincoln City.

She wanted her school.

Her bedroom.

Her friends.

And Daniel.

Vanessa did not like that last answer.

The previous evening, the argument escalated.

“Mom said if I loved you so much, I could go wait for you.”

“Did she lock the door?”

Lily nodded.

“Front and garage.”

“What about your backpack?”

“Grandma took it.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Grandma was there?”

Lily nodded again.

Vanessa’s mother, Diane, had arrived in her silver Subaru while Lily stood under the front porch overhang.

Lily thought Diane was taking her somewhere warm.

Instead, Diane took the backpack.

“Grandma said she needed it so nobody could say Mom packed it.”

Daniel sat very still.

“Then what happened?”

“She told me to stay by the mailbox.”

“For how long?”

Lily looked confused.

“Until somebody saw me.”

Daniel felt cold despite the overheated hospital room.

This was no longer a mother losing her temper and putting a child outside.

Someone wanted Lily seen.

Melanie immediately contacted the child-welfare investigator assigned to the case.

Daniel made one decision before anyone asked him to.

Vanessa would not return to the house while Lily was there.

He called a family-law attorney named Rachel Kim, recommended by a coworker who had gone through a difficult custody dispute.

After hearing the basics, Rachel asked:

“Mr. Mercer, has your wife already consulted a divorce lawyer?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Find out.”

Daniel looked through the hospital window toward the storm-darkened parking lot.

He already knew there was something larger beneath Lily’s night outside.

Now he intended to know exactly what.
