Chapter 12 - THE OFFER I DIDN’T EXPECT

Three days after Derek’s arrest, Catherine asked me to come upstairs again.

This time the office blinds were open, sunlight fell across the metal desk, and nothing in the room belonged to Derek anymore—not his control, not his lies, not even the air.

She handed me a folder.

Inside was a formal letter:

all disciplinary actions tied to manipulated attendance reviews were voided;

my employment record was cleared;

my lost time was fully paid;

and a corrective statement had been placed in my file documenting that I had been wrongfully targeted.

There was also something else.

A promotion offer.

Floor Operations Coordinator, interim to permanent review after ninety days.

I read the title twice.

Then the salary.

Then the benefits adjustment.

I looked up at her. “You can’t be serious.”

“I am.”

“I’m not management.”

“Good,” she said. “I need someone in that position who still remembers what the floor actually feels like.”

I let out a short breath. “This is because I helped you on the roadside.”

“No,” Catherine said evenly. “This is because you noticed damaged seals when others stayed silent, questioned mismatched manifests, kept your integrity when you could have looked away, and still stopped to help a stranger even knowing it might cost you.”

That hit differently.

Because she was not repaying a favor.

She was recognizing a pattern.

I looked back at the offer.

More money.

Better hours.

A direct reporting line outside the site supervisor chain.

Enough breathing room that Lily’s school emergencies would stop feeling like financial disaster.

“Can I think about it tonight?” I asked.

“Of course.”

I stood to leave, then paused at the door.

“One question.”

“Yes?”

“Why did you really come back to the warehouse yourself? I mean after Route 9.”

She rested a hand over her belly and answered without hesitation.

“Because while I was in the car after you changed the tire, my assistant told me Derek had already emailed corporate twice about an urgent termination that needed immediate executive signoff. I wanted to see a man that eager with my own eyes.”

That made me smile despite everything.

By the time I drove home, I already knew my answer.
