Chapter 11 - THE DAY THEY CAME FOR DEREK

The police took Derek from the warehouse the following Friday.
They did it in daylight.
No dramatic chase. No shouting match on the loading bay.
Just two detectives, a search warrant, and a quiet chain of consequences finally catching up to a man who had believed systems only ever moved downward.
He arrived that morning with his attorney, expecting to retrieve personal items from his office under supervision.
Instead, once the additional records from the shell contractor account and forged manifest authorizations were confirmed, Detectives Freeman and Lowe informed him he was being detained on charges related to fraud, theft, falsification of business records, and identity misuse.
The whole warehouse watched.
No one pretended not to.
Mara stood beside me near Receiving Bay 2 with her arms crossed. Luis stopped his pallet jack mid-lane. Even the new temp crew had heard enough rumors to know something important was happening.
As Freeman turned Derek toward the exit, Derek saw me.
He stopped just long enough to say, “You think you won because of one lucky morning?”
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
Catherine did it for me.
She had come down from the office during the arrest and was standing a few yards away.
“No,” she said. “He kept what was his because he did the right thing when there was no reason to believe anyone important would ever know.”
Derek laughed once, but the sound had nothing left in it.
Then the detectives led him out past the time clock where he had waited for me at 8:27 on Tuesday morning.
Past the same floor where he had made people lower their eyes.
Past the glass office where he had smiled at a termination line and assumed the story belonged to him.
And then he was gone.
The warehouse exhaled all at once.
Mara nudged my shoulder.
“You look like you finally slept.”
“I didn’t.”
She snorted. “Close enough.”
That afternoon, for the first time in months, people laughed in the break room without glancing over their shoulders.

But it does leave.
