Chapter 12 - The Mother Between Them

The preliminary hearing filled only half a courtroom.

That made it worse somehow.

No television cameras.

No dramatic crowd.

Just fluorescent lights, wooden benches, lawyers, family, and facts.

Maya testified first.

She explained her cerebral palsy in practical terms: reduced balance, muscle stiffness, forearm crutches for distance and stability.

“Do you fall?” the defense attorney asked.

“Yes.”

“Frequently?”

“More than you probably do.”

A few people almost smiled.

Maya did not.

“But falling doesn’t explain somebody taking my crutches and kneeing me in the face.”

Daniel stared straight ahead.

The ER physician testified that the fracture pattern and facial bruising were consistent with direct trauma, not a simple forward fall.

Deputy Harris described the bent crutch behind the mudroom door and Daniel’s conflicting explanation of where Maya had been standing.

Then Lorraine took the stand.

Her hands shook so badly she spilled water before answering the first question.

She admitted she had lied to Claire.

Admitted she initially supported Daniel’s fall story.

Admitted Daniel had previously hidden Maya’s crutches.

Admitted the false insurance account.

Daniel finally looked at her.

Lorraine stopped speaking.

The prosecutor waited.

“Mrs. Price?”

Lorraine stared at her husband.

“He told me,” she said slowly, “that if Maya kept resisting the house sale, he’d prove she couldn’t take care of herself.”

Daniel’s attorney stood.

“Objection.”

The judge ruled.

Lorraine kept going when allowed.

“I thought he meant court. I didn’t think he’d hurt her like that.”

Maya’s face tightened.

Lorraine saw it.

“No,” she corrected herself. “That isn’t true.”

The courtroom seemed smaller.

“I knew he might hurt her. I just kept telling myself he wouldn’t.”

It was the first completely honest sentence Claire had heard from her mother since the storm.

At the end of the hearing, the judge found sufficient evidence for the felony assault charge to proceed.

Daniel was not convicted that day.

He did not leave in theatrical ruin.

The case simply moved forward.

Outside, Lorraine approached Maya.

“Can I hug you?”

Maya looked at her mother for several seconds.

“No.”

May you like

Lorraine nodded.

For once, she respected the answer.
