Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO WHISPERED STAIRS KNEW MORE THAN FEAR
Celeste finally requested a deal.
Not with us.
With the prosecutors.
Her lawyer contacted the special prosecutor and said Celeste was “willing to clarify her level of responsibility.”
That phrase alone made Adrian laugh bitterly.
Clarify.
As though the bruises needed editing.
In her proffer interview, Celeste admitted pieces carefully.
Yes, she knew Raymond was pressuring us about the trust.
Yes, she blocked Adrian’s contact because Raymond said he meddled.
Yes, she sometimes lied to teachers and doctors about visible injuries because she was afraid.
But she still tried to cast herself as a woman swept into evil by a stronger spouse.
Then the prosecutors confronted her with the pre-death laptop access logs, the recovered messages, and Dad’s beneficiary changes.
Her story shifted.
She had known about the trust earlier than she admitted.
She knew Dad no longer trusted her with financial authority.
She married Raymond four months after Dad’s funeral because she believed together they could “stabilize things.”
Stabilize meant regain control.
What she would not answer clearly was whether she and Raymond were together before Dad died.
The prosecutors left that hanging.
They didn’t need an affair to prove abuse.
They needed motive, intent, and participation.
They had all three.
Still, one thing puzzled Detective Nolan.
Why had Celeste started shaking the moment Dr. Grant questioned the matching bruises?
Simple fear of exposure didn’t entirely explain it.
The answer came the next day from a final archived folder inside Dad’s cloud.
It was a recording made two weeks before his death.
Dad had captured an argument in his home office.
Celeste’s voice.
Raymond’s voice.
