Chapter 5 - THE TRUST WASN’T THE ONLY THING HE WANTED

The first financial review uncovered something even uglier.

Raymond and Celeste were drowning.

Raymond’s small construction-supply business had unpaid tax liens.

Three personal credit cards were maxed out.

The house refinanced twice in eighteen months.

And Celeste had taken a home-equity loan six months earlier against the last property still fully in her name.

The money was gone.

Not to school tuition.

Not to medical bills.

To business losses, gambling payments, and something else:

monthly transfers into a shell company called Vale Family Consulting.

There was no real consulting business.

It was just another place to pool disappearing money.

The prosecutors handling the abuse case began coordinating with a financial-crimes unit. Raymond’s exposure widened quickly.

Still, one question remained.

If the trust froze under coercion, why was Raymond so sure he could get the money?

The answer came from Lily, of all people.

“He kept asking about Uncle Adrian,” she said quietly. “Not just where he was. Whether Dad ever left him anything in writing.”

That sent Adrian back through old files.

Three days later, he called Detective Nolan and asked for an immediate meeting.

Our father had left something else.

Not money.

Not shares.
