Chapter 9 - WHAT NEFTALÍ HEARD THROUGH THE STUDY DOOR

Neftalí had recorded no secret confession.
Good.
The case did not need one.
But his diary contained an entry from two months before death.
Heard V and Mateo discussing cabin condition and “moving Mom after.” Need to confirm context before accusing.
There was his flaw again.
Confirm context.
One more document.
One more week.
One more reason not to have the argument today.
Then:
Asked V directly about Silver Peak. She says Mom can be “taken care of” after sale. Told her no sale without Mom choosing freely. Fight terrible.
Next day:
Mom asked why Valeria is angry. Lied. Told her work stress.
I closed the diary.
“That idiot.”
Helen looked at me.
I started crying.
“He protected me from the truth.”
“Yes.”
“He thought that was kindness.”
“Probably.”
“It wasn’t.”
“No.”
For years, Neftalí had filtered Valeria for me.
And filtered me for her.
He thought love meant preventing collision.
Instead, everyone lived inside edited versions of each other.
Then his final entries changed.
Met Helen.
Trust restatement complete.
Move backups to cabin.
Need to tell Mom everything after procedure. No more delay.
The cardiac procedure was scheduled for the following month.
He never reached it.
He died on a Tuesday night after dinner.
Valeria found him collapsed in the study.
Paramedics could not revive him.
The hidden iron box was prepared twelve days earlier.
The altar moved over the compartment.
Frank installed the final screws.
Neftalí knew two things.
One:
Valeria might try to pressure me into releasing the mountain rights.
Two:
If he died suddenly, I might not receive information quickly enough through normal estate channels.
So he created a backup route.
Not a secret will.
Not a magic deed.
A trail.
Helen’s card.
Copies.
Appraisal.
Emails.
Trust summary.
Instructions.
Enough to lead me to professionals holding the legally operative originals.
It was smart.
It was also heartbreaking.
Because Neftalí could prepare a steel box beneath a floor.
But still could not sit his mother down and say:
“My wife is planning to pressure you out of rights worth millions.”
Then Helen found the final document on the drive.
A memo from Neftalí to himself.
If I die before talking to Mom: Valeria will likely move her to cabin. I hate writing that. But if she does, Mom will find altar. She always cleans when frightened.
I laughed through tears.
That man knew me.
Then the next line:
What I cannot decide is whether to stop the Silver Peak sale entirely or let Mom decide after she knows the true value. It is her right, not mine.
That sentence became the heart of Part 10.
Because I had spent months assuming Neftalí hid the box so I could keep the mountain land.
May you like
He hadn’t.
He hid it so I could make the decision without being manipulated.
