Chapter 8 - THE DOCUMENT VALERIA SAID I STOLE

Valeria’s side found a missing paper.

A photocopy.

Unsigned.

Draft title:

LIFE ESTATE RELEASE AND FAMILY ACCOMMODATION AGREEMENT

It offered me the Pueblo condo and $50,000.

Her attorney argued Neftalí had authorized negotiations.

Helen produced his emails opposing the terms.

Then Valeria changed position.

She claimed I had pressured Neftalí into preserving my life estate because I wanted to stop him selling family land.

I had not.

The life estate was twenty-two years old.

Rafael created it.

Recorded publicly.

Before Valeria married Neftalí.

That ended that argument quickly.

Then she accused me of taking records from the cabin.

Everything had been inventoried.

That ended more slowly but cleanly.

What interested Helen was why Valeria cared so much about the draft.

The answer appeared during document production.

Silver Peak’s original letter of intent included an expiration clause.

If Neftalí died before closing, his successor had ninety days to continue negotiations before the buyer could withdraw without penalty.

Valeria had ninety days.

She needed my release.

Fast.

That explained why she removed me from the Cherry Hills house immediately after the funeral.

A grieving widow may genuinely want her mother-in-law gone.

Also true.

But sending me specifically to the mountain cabin served another purpose.

The cabin was the property connected to my life estate.

Silver Peak’s advisers wanted evidence of my residential needs and willingness to relocate.

If I moved into the cabin and found it unbearable, Valeria could approach me with the Pueblo condo as rescue.

I still did not know whether that was her deliberate plan.

Then discovery produced her text to Mateo.

Sent the night after Neftalí died.

She’s going up there tomorrow. Give it a few days. No heat, no water. She’ll sign anything for a real apartment.

I stared at the screen.

There it was.

No inference.

No misunderstanding.

Valeria had not merely thrown me out.

She had selected the cabin because its condition was supposed to pressure me.

Mateo replied:

You sure she’ll stay?

Valeria:

Where else is she going to go?

I read that sentence several times.

Where else.

She knew I had friends.

Family.

Savings.

But years of living inside my son’s household had made her see me as dependent.

I had cooked.

Cleaned.

Helped.

Stayed.

Therefore:

helpless.

That was her mistake.

Then another message.

Once she signs release, sell the land. Then we can sort house later.

The mountain property came first.

Not the mansion.

We now knew enough to understand the cabin.

But Part 10 still had one more layer.

Because Valeria’s plan to pressure me had begun before Neftalí died.

And my son knew about it.

That was why the altar was there.
