Chapter 6 - The Kitchen Confrontation

The main house was eerily quiet when I unlocked the front door. I found Ethan and Vanessa in the kitchen. The granite island was covered in printed bank statements and past-due notices. Vanessa was crying, her face buried in her hands. Ethan was pacing.
They both froze when I walked in.
"Where is Leo?" I asked.
"He's watching a movie in his room," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking. She looked up at me, her eyes red and swollen. The superiority she had worn on the terrace the night before was entirely gone. "He forged my name, Eleanor. He put my parents' business on the line. We're going to lose everything."
Ethan stepped forward, his hands raised in a desperate, placating gesture. "Mom, you can fix this. Martin said you have access to Dad's accounts. You can pay off the bridge loan. We can keep the house."
I pulled the twelve-million-dollar cashier's check from my purse and set it gently on the granite counter.
Ethan let out a ragged breath of relief, reaching for it.
I placed my hand firmly over the paper. "This isn't for you, Ethan."
I looked directly at Vanessa. "This check is made out to the private lender. It clears the debt on your parents' business. It erases the forged guarantor documents. It keeps you out of federal court, and it keeps Leo in his school."
Vanessa stared at the check, then up at the bruise on my forehead. Tears spilled over her cheeks. "Why?"
"Because you are Leo's mother," I said steadily. "But the Westport estate is being listed for sale tomorrow. Ethan's development firm is bankrupt. You have thirty days to pack your things. You will leave this house, and you will never ask me for a single cent again."

Ethan’s face contorted in panic. "Mom, you can't kick us out! Where are we supposed to go?"
"You're broke, Ethan," I said, echoing Vanessa's words from the night before. "You'll have to learn where you belong."
