Chapter 4 - The Forged Signature

Martin Hale’s office in downtown Stamford smelled of old paper and expensive coffee. He slid a thick blue folder across his mahogany desk.

"The asset freeze was executed at 8:00 AM," Martin said, adjusting his glasses. "The twenty-one million is fully liquid and under your exclusive control. Ethan has thirty days to vacate the Westport property."

"Vanessa mentioned a bridge loan being flagged for fraud," I said, ignoring the coffee he had poured for me. "What did Ethan do?"

Martin sighed heavily. "When we triggered the asset reversion, the private lender who was underwriting Ethan’s business debt ran an emergency title search. They discovered that Ethan didn't own the Westport house. But that's not the worst part."

Martin opened the folder, revealing a copy of a loan application.

"To secure the initial twelve million, Ethan didn't just try to pledge the cottage," Martin explained. "He pledged Vanessa's family's graphic design business as a secondary guarantor. He signed her name to the documents."

I stared at the signature. It looked nothing like Vanessa’s precise, looping handwriting. "She doesn't know."

"No, she doesn't," Martin agreed. "But the lender does now. Because the Westport house is untouchable, the private equity firm is legally obligated to call in the secondary collateral. They are going to seize Vanessa’s company by the end of the week. And when they realize she didn't sign this, they will refer it to the federal prosecutor."

I closed my eyes. Vanessa had watched me bleed. She had called me useless and ungrateful. But she had done it believing Ethan's lies, thinking I was a burden draining her husband dry. She didn't know the man she married was about to send her to federal prison and leave my grandson in foster care.
