Chapter 12 - Jasper Explained What He Thought Marriage Meant

The direct confrontation happened six months later at a combined civil mediation connected to the divorce and disputed property claims.

Jasper was out on bond under strict conditions and prohibited from contacting Isabella except through lawyers or court-approved proceedings.

She chose to attend.

I waited in another room.

This was not mine to control.

Nina told me afterward what happened.

Jasper looked thinner.

The expensive certainty was gone.

Blackwood Development had entered a court-supervised restructuring of several troubled entities. He had been removed from day-to-day management by independent directors and lenders.

But he still spoke to Isabella as if the old rules applied.

“We can fix this.”

“No.”

“You loved me.”

“I did.”

That answer seemed to hurt him more than denial.

Jasper leaned forward.

“Everything I did was to keep the company alive.”

Isabella looked at him.

“You tied me to a ceiling beam.”

“I needed you to understand the stakes.”

“No. You needed me afraid.”

He tried another explanation.

Thousands of employees.

His father’s legacy.

Personal guarantees.

Lenders waiting for weakness.

The Harbor project that would collapse if the foundation land disappeared.

Some of it was true.

That was what made his motive believable.

Jasper had once convinced himself that preserving the company justified moving money temporarily.

Then misleading lenders.

Then forging authority.

Then controlling Isabella.

Each violation made the next easier.

“You think I wanted to hurt you?” he asked.

Isabella’s response was quiet.

“I think eventually you stopped caring whether hurting me worked.”

Jasper looked down.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then he asked what she wanted.

“My foundation separated from every Blackwood entity. A full accounting. No marital claim on its assets. And no private nondisclosure agreement covering what happened.”

“You want to humiliate me.”

“No.”

Isabella stood.

“I want to stop being responsible for hiding you.”

Jasper had been given the emotional choice at the center of everything:

accept accountability or keep turning his fear into her obligation.

He rejected the proposal.

“Then we’ll let a court decide.”

Isabella nodded.

“That’s the first fair thing you’ve said.”
