Chapter 5 - The Questions Before the Vacation

Claire barely slept.

Not because Mark had given her an answer.

Because he had rearranged months of memories.

Helen asking whether Claire still used prescription sleep medication.

Vanessa asking if Lily ever made her late for work.

Robert casually wanting to know how much Daniel’s life-insurance policy had been.

Her parents offering to keep Lily for an entire month during summer.

Vanessa taking photographs at Easter when Claire fell asleep on the couch after working a double shift.

At the time Claire had laughed when she saw one.

“Delete that. I look dead.”

Vanessa had replied, “You look exhausted.”

Now Claire wondered where the photograph had gone.

Sarah listened while Claire listed each incident.

“This still doesn’t prove a legal plan,” she cautioned.

“I know.”

“Good. Because panic makes people fill gaps with whatever scares them most.”

Claire appreciated that Sarah never told her what she wanted to hear.

“So what do I do?”

“We document. And we let them move next.”

They did not wait long.

Helen called Claire from a different number.

Claire answered before recognizing it.

“Claire, please.”

Her mother sounded exhausted.

“Vanessa made a terrible decision. Your father and I should’ve stopped her.”

“You got a key to my room.”

Silence.

“Housekeeping was delayed.”

“You weren’t staying in my room.”

“The boys needed somewhere to sit.”

“Why did Dad lie to get me downstairs?”

Helen inhaled.

“Because we needed five minutes without you.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“For what?”

“To talk to Lily.”

“About what?”

“About how things are at home.”

Claire stood so fast the chair behind her scraped the hotel carpet.

“You interrogated my daughter after sending me away?”

“We were worried.”

“And when she didn’t tell you what you wanted?”

“Claire—”

“You put her in a hallway.”

Helen’s voice hardened.

“Nobody put her anywhere.”

There it was.

Not remorse.

Coordination.

Claire whispered, “You already agreed on the story.”

Her mother hung up.

Less than an hour later, Mark sent Claire a photograph.

It showed a yellow legal pad on Vanessa’s kitchen counter.

At the top were three handwritten words:

Claire — custody concerns.

Beneath them was a list.

Grief. Medication. Isolation. Drinking. Lily unsupervised.

May you like

The final line had been underlined twice.

Need independent incident.
