Chapter 14 - The Last Thing Claire Would Give Them
Claire agreed only because Sarah attended.
Helen and Robert looked older than they had three weeks earlier.
Robert spoke first.
“We’re not filing anything.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
Helen twisted a tissue between her fingers.
“Vanessa thinks we’re betraying her.”
“That’s between you and Vanessa.”
Robert looked at Claire for a long moment.
“She didn’t invent all our concerns.”
Sarah shifted slightly.
Claire raised a hand.
“Let him finish.”
Robert swallowed.
“You did disappear after Daniel died.”
“I stopped coming to family events.”
“You stopped needing us.”
Claire understood then.
That was the wound beneath everything.
Her parents had interpreted independence as rejection.
Vanessa had interpreted boundaries as competition.
None of it excused what they did.
But now Claire finally understood it.
Helen began to cry.
“I thought if a court gave us scheduled time, I’d never have to wonder whether you’d take her away.”
“She isn’t something you schedule possession of.”
“I know that now.”
Claire looked directly at her.
“Do you?”
Helen nodded slowly.
Robert’s apology came harder.
“I lied about the front desk.”
“Yes.”
“I thought Lily would be outside for five minutes. Maybe ten.”
“And a stranger would find her.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
Claire waited.
“Say the rest.”
Robert’s voice roughened.
“We would have said you left her.”
Helen covered her mouth.
Sarah did not move.
Claire had imagined hearing that admission a hundred times.
It brought no triumph.
Just finality.
Her parents asked for a path back.
Claire gave them one, but not the one they wanted.
No contact with Lily for now.
Both parents would attend counseling if they genuinely hoped for future reconciliation.
They would not discuss Claire with Lily through relatives.
They would not blame Vanessa alone.
And Lily’s therapist—not Helen, not Robert, not Claire’s guilt—would help determine when contact might safely resume.
“That could take months,” Helen whispered.
“Yes.”
“Or longer.”
Claire looked at her mother.
“Yes.”
Robert signed the written agreement first.
Helen signed after him.
Outside the office, Claire received one text from Vanessa.
Congratulations. You finally got rid of your family.

Then she blocked her sister.
For the first time, she did not write a response.
