Chapter 9 - The Message Meant for Teresa

The real break came from Rosalind’s vanity.

She loved voice notes. Loved them.

She sent them instead of texts whenever she thought she sounded especially clever.

Apparently, she had once sent one to Alden while venting about me, and because his phone synced to the family tablet, the audio remained buried in an app backup.

I found it by accident.

At first I almost deleted it without listening.

Then I saw the date.

The morning of the slap.

I pressed play.

Rosalind’s voice filled the room.

Mom says don’t worry. If Camilla freaks out and puts hands on either of us, that lawyer Alden talked to says it helps. Honestly, I can get her to snap in ten minutes. She’s been hanging by a thread for years.

My whole body went cold.

The message cut off there, probably because she had started another one.

It wasn’t everything.

But it was enough.

Enough to turn suspicion into shape.

Enough to show the slap was surrounded by intent.

Valerie nearly smiled when she heard it, which on a lawyer is the emotional equivalent of fireworks.

“This,” she said, “is what they were hoping never existed.”

We turned the audio over to the detective and to the court through proper channels.

Alden’s attorney immediately tried to challenge context.

Maybe Rosalind meant only an argument.

Maybe she meant a verbal reaction.

Maybe it was family sarcasm.

Then the evaluator read the transcript beside the emails Alden had sent before the incident, and the argument started collapsing under its own weight.

Because the pieces matched too neatly.

Alden had asked a lawyer what would happen if I became physical.

Rosalind said she could make me snap.

Teresa tried to collect Mateo the next morning.

The pattern was no longer something I felt in my gut.

It was documented.

And part 10 was where all of it finally locked together.
