Chapter 4 - The Child Who Had Been Warned

Three days later we had the first hearing for the temporary protective order.

Teresa arrived in pearls.

Rosalind wore a navy suit and a look of injured innocence.

Alden stood between them, jaw set, as if he were escorting victims instead of the people who had terrorized his child.

Valerie presented the hospital records, Dr. Patel’s statement, and the daycare incident report.

Alden’s attorney tried to redirect everything toward my reaction.

“Yes or no,” he asked me, “did you strike both Ms. Finch and Ms. Finch’s daughter?”

“Yes,” I said.

The courtroom went still.

I could feel Alden’s mother almost smiling.

Then Valerie stood for redirect.

“Why?”

“Because Rosalind had just slapped my three-year-old son twice hard enough to knock him down and split his cheek with her ring. And because Teresa laughed.”

Rosalind looked offended, as though reality itself had insulted her.

The judge granted a temporary order preventing Teresa and Rosalind from contacting Mateo and ordered that any contact Alden had with him for the moment be supervised.

Outside the courthouse, Alden caught up with me by the elevator.

“You’re turning one bad afternoon into a war.”

I looked at him.

“One bad afternoon?”

He lowered his voice. “Mom didn’t mean—”

“Stop.”

He stopped.

“For once in your life,” I said, “stop translating cruelty into something polite.”

His face hardened.

“You’re poisoning Mateo against my family.”

Before I could answer, Valerie stepped between us.

“Future communication goes through counsel.”

Alden backed off, but not before giving me a look I knew too well.

It was the look he got when he realized charm wouldn’t work and he would have to move on to pressure.

That evening Erin, the therapist, called again.

“Mateo said something else today,” she told me. “He said, ‘Daddy told Grandma she can pick me up if Mommy is bad.’”

There it was.

Not proof yet.

But a child’s memory pointing in the same direction as the daycare attempt.

That night I opened our shared cloud account to download tax records Valerie had requested.

While searching, I found a scanned PDF I had never seen before.

It was a blank school pickup authorization form from Meadowbrook Early Learning.

The file had been created two weeks before Rosalind hit Mateo.

Two weeks.

I sat staring at the screen while my pulse beat in my ears.

Alden hadn’t improvised after the slap.

He had prepared for something before it ever happened.
