Chapter 6 - DANIEL CHOOSES A SIDE

I wish I could say my husband chose me for the first time that night.

The truth is messier.

Daniel had chosen me many times in private, emotionally, sincerely.

What he had never fully done was choose the consequences that came with choosing me in public.

That changed on December 26.

He sat in a conference room at St. Mary’s with Detective Moreno, a bank investigator from First Dominion, and an outside attorney he had retained that morning—someone not chosen by his family.

He gave them everything.

Corporate records.

Emails with Martin Kline.

Old text messages from Patricia insisting he “trust the family on this one.”

Board notices he barely skimmed months earlier.

He also signed an affidavit confirming that he had not authorized the loan guarantee and that I had not signed the spousal waiver.

When Patricia learned he had cooperated, she called him fourteen times.

He did not answer.

Frank left a voicemail saying, “You are destroying your own blood over one misunderstanding.”

Vanessa texted him:

Claire always wanted this.

Daniel showed me the phone, then deleted nothing.

“I should have gone to the police when the package arrived,” he said.

“Yes,” I answered.

He closed his eyes.

No defensiveness.

No explanation.

Just yes.

That mattered more than any apology in that moment.

Then he told me something I hadn’t known.

Three months earlier, Patricia had asked him to sign a routine board consent while they were at dinner.

He declined because the wording referenced “temporary collateral measures” he hadn’t reviewed.

She got angry enough to leave the restaurant.

Afterward, Frank called and said, “Your mother is under pressure. Just sign the housekeeping items and stop embarrassing us.”

Daniel didn’t sign.

What he didn’t understand then was that they didn’t need only him.

They needed me too.

I was the firewall.

And Patricia decided to burn the firewall down.
