Chapter 11 - THE CONFRONTATION I DIDN’T NEED BUT TOOK ANYWAY

Patricia requested one mediated conversation before formal charging decisions were finalized.

My lawyer said no good could come of it.

I went anyway.

Not because I wanted closure.

Because I wanted to hear whether Patricia believed any of this had crossed a line, or whether her line had always been movable when money was at stake.

She wore black cashmere and pearl earrings.

Of course she did.

She began with grief.

“This family is falling apart.”

I looked at her.

“You burned it.”

Her mouth tightened.

“No one intended Claire to be seriously hurt,” she said to the mediator, as if speaking about me in the third person would make me easier to manage.

“There it is,” I said. “The phrase you keep hiding inside.”

“What phrase?”

“Seriously hurt.”

Patricia inhaled slowly.

“Vanessa lost control.”

“No,” I said. “Vanessa followed a pattern you created.”

Her eyes sharpened then, and for one second the hostess mask dropped.

“You never belonged in our world.”

The mediator shifted.

My lawyer did not.

I laughed once, softly.

“And there it is too.”

Patricia went on.

Daniel was naïve.

Frank was overextended.

The company needed stability.

I made everything emotional.

My parents were “people who should have been grateful to see a daughter rise.”

Every sentence revealed her more cleanly than any admission could have.

When I finally stood to leave, Patricia said, “If you had just trusted us, this would never have happened.”

I turned back.

“No,” I said. “If I had trusted you, I would have had no record.”

That was the closest thing to fear I ever saw in her eyes.

Not fear of jail.

May you like

Not fear of scandal.

Fear that the person she thought could be erased had documented her instead.
