Chapter 9 - The Birthday Was Supposed to End With Me Hitting Her

The hidden folder on Sarah’s phone was called:
EM EXIT.
Emily exit.
Inside were screenshots of domestic-violence information.
Notes.
Photographs of my truck.
Pictures of me in the garage.
A video of me punching a heavy bag.
I had been training.
Sarah labelled it:
ANGER.
Another clip showed me raising my voice at a loose dog near the road.
VOLATILE.
A photograph of my gun safe.
WEAPONS.
Everything ordinary could become something else if she cropped enough context.
Then the planned birthday confrontation appeared.
A note:
JOHN HOME 4:15–4:30.
How did she know?
I had texted Emily that morning saying I hoped to be back around then with Lily’s cake.
Emily mentioned it to Patricia.
Patricia mentioned it to Sarah.
Nobody saw the chain as dangerous.
Another note:
BALCONY = SAFE DISTANCE + FULL VIEW.
Then:
GET HIM TO COME UPSTAIRS.
My stomach tightened.
The bucket was not the final action.
It was bait.
Sarah expected me to run upstairs.
Confront her.
Maybe grab her.
Maybe hit her.
She planned to record from her phone while a second device filmed from the bedroom doorway.
Investigators found the second phone mounted against a shelf.
It captured the balcony.
Then me below.
Then Sarah waiting after throwing the water.
She actually whispered:
“Come on.”
I did not hear it that day.
The microphone did.
Come on.
She wanted me upstairs.
Then another message to Patricia from earlier that morning:
Once Emily sees him put hands on me, this is over.
Patricia:
I said don't provoke him.
Sarah:
I'm not provoking. I'm protecting my sister.
Clue number four.
The intended ending was now explicit.
But there was one final layer we still had not seen.
Sarah had drafted a message to Emily.
Unsent.
Timestamped twenty minutes before I arrived.
I’m sorry. I tried to talk to John about Lily and he snapped. He scared the girls. I have it recorded. Please don't come home alone.
She had written the outcome before the event occurred.
That was the last clue.
Camera ready.
Bucket ready.
Patio timed to my arrival.
The future text already written.
Sarah did not simply hope I would lose my temper.
She had built the afternoon around that assumption.

The only missing piece was what she expected Emily to do after seeing the video.
Part 10 answered that.
