Chapter 12 - Sarah Finally Said Why She Hated Me
Sarah requested a direct meeting.
Lawyers nearby.
No children.
Emily wanted to attend.
I said it was her choice.
She came.
Sarah looked smaller than I remembered.
No expensive jacket.
No perfect hair.
She stared at me.
“I never thought you’d hurt Lily.”
I answered:
“You put her outside to make me angry.”
“I thought you'd get her.”
“I did.”
“That’s what I mean.”
I almost laughed.
“You counted on me being a good father and a violent man at the same time.”
Sarah began crying.
“I hated how calm you always were.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“Because Emily changed after she married you.”
Emily asked:
“How?”
“You stopped asking Mom before decisions.”
Emily stared.
“You stopped lending me money without questions.”
Silence.
“You stopped coming every Sunday.”
Another silence.
“You stopped treating this family like we were all one account.”
Sarah wiped her face.
“And John acted like none of us mattered.”
I finally understood.
I did not hate Sarah.
I dismissed her.
Often for good reason.
But contempt still communicates.
“You were wrong about one thing.”
She looked at me.
“I didn’t think you didn’t matter.”
“Could've fooled me.”
“I thought your opinion of me didn't matter.”
She flinched.
“That is different.”
Emily leaned forward.
“But it still doesn't explain Lily.”
Sarah nodded.
“No.”
Then she told the truth.
She believed I had “taken Emily away.”
Not geographically.
Psychologically.
Before me, Emily rescued everybody.
After me, she started saying:
“Let me check with John.”
“Let me look at the budget.”
“I can’t this month.”
Sarah interpreted boundaries as my control.
It never occurred to her that Emily was learning them herself.
“You needed me to be the villain,” I said.
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.”
Emily started crying.
Sarah looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily answered:
“You are sorry because it failed.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Maybe at first.”
It was not a beautiful reconciliation.
