Chapter 8 - The Woman My Father Erased

Nine months after Thanksgiving, most of the immediate financial dispute had settled into slow legal procedure.

Then Evelyn called Natalie.

“I found Margaret.”

I had never heard the name.

When I arrived at Natalie’s office, an older woman sat beside Evelyn.

Silver hair.

Camel-colored coat.

Black document case.

She studied me.

“You look more like your grandmother than Frank does.”

I frowned.

“You knew my grandmother?”

“Very well.”

“Who are you?”

She opened the case.

“My name is Margaret Whitman.”

My heartbeat changed.

“My father doesn’t have a sister.”

Her smile held no warmth.

“He has spent forty years saying that.”

Margaret was Frank’s older half-sister.

Family history called Frank an only child.

Documents said otherwise.

Birth certificate.

Photographs.

Letters.

A partnership agreement for the original Whitman Construction.

Ownership:

Frank — 45%.

Margaret — 35%.

Their father Samuel — 20%.

“What happened to your thirty-five percent?”

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

Then back at me.

“Frank says I sold it.”

“Did you?”

“Some.”

“And the rest?”

“That is why I came.”

She produced a photograph of Brookfield.

Same house.

Decades earlier.

Samuel Whitman in the yard.

Young Margaret beside him.

Teenage Frank on the porch.

“Dad told us he bought the house after he married Mom.”

“He bought part of it.”

My skin prickled.

“What does that mean?”

The property had been tied to money coming from the original family company.

After Samuel died, Frank represented himself as the main successor.

Margaret disputed several transfers.

Then family money went missing.

Frank accused Margaret.

She left Ohio.

The family story became:

Margaret stole from Dad and ran.

Margaret looked at me.

“I stopped correcting people who had already decided what kind of woman I was.”

The sentence felt familiar.

Too familiar.
