Chapter 6 - Mason Told Me Why He Spit

Two weeks after Thanksgiving, Mason sent me a voice message.

“Aunt Rachel, I’m sorry I spit in your plate.”

I listened without moving.

Then he said:

“Dad said you were stealing Grandma’s house.”

My expression changed.

Stealing?

“He said everybody was gonna have more money after Grandpa refinanced, but you were trying to stop it because you hate us.”

I closed my eyes.

Then, casually:

“Mom said after Monday you couldn’t control the house anymore anyway.”

I saved the message.

I did not question him.

I replied:

“Thank you for apologizing. You did something wrong, but adults should not have pulled you into adult money problems.”

Five minutes later, Derek called furious.

“You interrogated my son?”

“I didn’t ask him a single question.”

“He’s twelve.”

“Yes.”

“You’re weaponizing a kid.”

The hypocrisy was almost impressive.

Six months earlier, Derek had asked me to invest $75,000 in a restaurant concept.

I declined after reviewing the numbers.

He had called me “Queen Rachel” ever since.

Now we learned why the refinance money mattered so much to him.

His real-estate side business was drowning.

Failed short-term rental renovation.

Contractor claims.

Credit-card debt.

Private loan nearing maturity.

The $50,000 from Brookfield was not a family gift in his mind.

It was a rescue package.

And I was standing between him and it.

That explained his resentment.

It also explained something uglier.

Before Thanksgiving dinner, Mason had overheard Derek tell Lauren:

“Once Rachel gets offended enough, maybe she’ll finally stay out of the family’s money.”

Mason had heard an adult strategy.

Then turned it into a child’s cruelty.

The spit was spontaneous.

The contempt behind it was not.
