Chapter 6 - WHEN HIS MOTHER STOPPED DEFENDING HIM

By Saturday afternoon, Michael's family had split into three camps.

The relatives who had seen Susan's edited clip thought I was violent.

The relatives Mary quietly called afterward knew there had been a bucket of ice water first.

And Susan continued insisting everyone was overreacting.

Michael stopped apologizing.

Instead, he began bargaining.

Come home and we'll fix this.

Don't involve banks.

Don't talk to Karen again.

We can handle Derek privately.

That last message mattered.

I called him.

“What does Derek have on you?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why did you send him fifteen thousand dollars?”

“You don't understand how it works.”

“Explain it.”

“It was debt.”

“How much?”

He didn't answer.

“Michael.”

“I said I'd handle it.”

That phrase had carried us through most of our engagement.

He'd handle the late credit-card payment.

He'd handle the suspicious cash withdrawals.

He'd handle the nights he stayed downstairs watching games until two in the morning.

I had accepted those answers because I didn't want to become the suspicious fiancée checking every receipt.

Now I understood that trust without questions had become cover.

That was my part in this.

Not the gambling.

Not the deception.

But the willingness to ignore things that made me uncomfortable because I wanted the wedding to remain uncomplicated.

Mary called me that evening.

Her voice was quieter.

“I asked him about the money.”

“And?”

“He screamed at me.”

That surprised her more than it surprised me.

“He said you were trying to turn us against him.”

“Did he answer you?”

“No.”

Then Mary said something I didn't expect.

“I shouldn't have dumped that water on you.”

It wasn't a complete apology.

Not yet.

But it was the first crack.

“I believed him,” she said. “I believed you were making him feel like a guest in his own marriage.”

“It was my house, Mary.”

“I know.”

“No. You knew that yesterday too.”

She went silent.

I let the silence stay.

Then she said, “Susan says Michael told her something before we went upstairs.”

“What?”

“She won't tell me.”

Susan wouldn't answer my calls.

But ten minutes later she sent one text.

I don't want to get involved.

I replied:

You were already involved at 5:30 yesterday morning.

She didn't respond.

At 11:08 p.m., another message appeared.

May you like

I never thought he actually wanted you to hit him.

Then she deleted it.
