Chapter 10 - WHAT THE CAMERA WAS REALLY FOR

Leverage.

That word rebuilt the entire morning in my head.

Michael recording before Mary entered.

The refinance papers waiting downstairs.

Mary repeatedly saying he feared I would “make a scene.”

Susan being told not to stop filming.

Michael's satisfied expression after I slapped him.

For a week, I had believed the bucket was a cruel family prank that happened to expose a financial secret.

I had it backward.

The financial secret had created the prank.

Michael knew I was becoming harder to persuade about the house.

He knew I had refused to move $15,000 from my savings.

He knew the refinance couldn't proceed without me.

And he knew his family already believed I was controlling because he had spent months teaching them to believe it.

The morning after the wedding, he had wanted evidence that fit the story.

He didn't need me badly injured.

He needed me angry.

If I laughed, his family would soften me up over breakfast and push the refinance.

If I exploded, he would have a video.

Either way, he expected the morning to move him closer to my equity.

Susan came to Dana's apartment that evening.

She looked smaller without the confidence she'd worn in my bedroom.

“There's more.”

She handed me her phone.

Michael had texted her privately two weeks before the wedding.

Mom gets too intense sometimes. If Rebecca reacts, don't jump in right away.

Another message:

I need her to understand she can't threaten to throw me out every time we disagree.

I had never threatened to throw him out.

But six weeks earlier, during an argument about his gambling, I had said:

If you keep lying about money, I won't build a marriage like this.

Michael had converted a boundary into a threat.

Then converted the threat into a story.

Then built evidence for the story.

Susan rubbed both hands over her face.

“I thought he was just insecure about the house.”

“You still went upstairs.”

“I know.”

“And you laughed.”

“I know.”

Her voice cracked.

I didn't comfort her.

She wasn't the main architect, but she had enjoyed my humiliation until it became inconvenient.

“I'll send you everything,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because he told Mom this afternoon that you attacked us for no reason.”

I looked at her.

“So?”

“So I realized if he's willing to make you crazy to save himself, he'll do it to me too.”

That was the major truth Michael had accidentally exposed.

The problem wasn't just gambling.

May you like

It was the system he'd built around it.

Every person who loved him had been assigned a different version of reality.
