Chapter 11 - THE DAY AUSTIN CAME BACK ANYWAY

People like Austin rarely obey orders the first time.

Three nights after the amendment surfaced, he showed up outside Aunt Denise’s house just after dark. He pounded on the front door and shouted my name.

I was in the kitchen helping Graham line up crackers by color when I heard him.

Denise called 911 immediately.

I looked through the side window and saw him swaying on the porch, drunk or angry or both. He held a folded paper in one hand and kept yelling that we had stolen “his family” and “his money.”

His money.

He didn’t even know enough to change the script.

By the time police arrived, he had kicked over two flowerpots and torn the house numbers off the porch rail. He also left the folded paper jammed into the screen door.

It was a typed draft “care agreement” naming him as Graham’s future home provider.

The signature line for Mom was signed.

The signature line for me was forged.

He had come to scare us, but he accidentally brought attempted fraud to the front door.

The officers arrested him for violating the protective order, intimidation, and criminal mischief. The new evidence reopened the earlier complaint and strengthened the assault case.

When Mom learned he had been arrested, she didn’t call to apologize.

She called to say, “You’re ruining his life.”

I answered, “He started that himself.”

Then I hung up.

That was the first time I ended a call with my mother and didn’t cry afterward.
