Chapter 10 - THE TWIST GRANDMA LORETTA SAW COMING

Two days after the hearing, Ms. Feldman called all of us into her office because she had found something else in Grandma Loretta’s papers.

It was an amendment.

A legally witnessed amendment added six months before Grandma died.

And it changed everything.

The document said that if Cynthia ever permitted abuse or attempted to place Graham in a residential facility for financial advantage rather than legitimate medical necessity, she would automatically lose not only her role as trustee, but also her right to occupy the family house.

The trust then required two immediate steps:

First, temporary control would pass to Denise.

Second, once I turned eighteen—which would happen in just under three weeks—I would become successor co-trustee and preferred guardian nominee for Graham’s daily care.

But the twist was even bigger than that.

Attached to the amendment was a private memo from Grandma Loretta explaining why she changed it. She wrote that Cynthia and Austin had already approached her once asking whether “monthly support attached to Graham” could be used to “help the household” and whether the house could be sold if Graham were “better managed elsewhere.”

In other words, they had been planning this long before Austin slapped my brother.

The clues had been there all along:

Austin calling it “his house.”

The searches about representative payee status.

The brochure in the glove compartment.

The intake form already half-completed.

Mom’s note asking about “monthly support + respite payment.”

The way she tried to send us away instead of him.

The way she immediately sided with Austin.

The way she packed my things before the investigation even started.

The slap wasn’t the beginning of the plan.

It was just the moment the plan stopped hiding.

They were never trying to help Graham.

They were trying to remove the one child standing between them and money they thought they could control.

And the only reason it hadn’t worked sooner was because Grandma Loretta had expected exactly this kind of betrayal.
