Chapter 3 - THE DEBT GAVIN ASKED HER TO HIDE

Summit did not send an eviction crew.

It did not seize Harrell Urban Partners overnight.

It did not make a dramatic public announcement.

Real commercial debt collection was less theatrical and far more dangerous.

Evelyn issued a formal notice of covenant breach.

The notice requested documents specifically permitted under the loan agreement:

ownership ledgers,

transfer records,

financial statements,

collateral schedules,

related-party transactions,

and supporting records for the extension Gavin had obtained the year before.

The response came from Gavin himself.

Not his CFO.

Not outside counsel.

Gavin.

He called Stella at 7:13 the next morning.

“What are you doing?”

“Making pancakes.”

“Don’t do that.”

She poured batter into the skillet.

“Do what?”

“Pretend this is normal.”

Hazel was helping Paige cut strawberries.

Stella lowered her voice.

“Then tell me what isn’t normal.”

“You know that loan has been rolled for years.”

“Yes.”

“You know it’s meaningless.”

“If it were meaningless, why didn’t you disclose the transfer?”

Silence.

Then anger.

“This is because of last night.”

“No. Last night is why I stopped protecting you from questions.”

“Stella—”

“Comply with the lender request.”

“You own the lender.”

“No. Summit owns the debt through a portfolio entity.”

“Same difference.”

“It won’t be when lawyers start taking depositions.”

He hung up.

That afternoon Evelyn sent Stella a scanned copy of the transfer document.

Gavin had moved twenty-eight percent of Harrell Urban Partners into Harrell Legacy Lake LLC.

Meredith controlled sixty percent of the LLC.

Gavin controlled twenty.

The remaining twenty belonged to an older family trust.

The structure made little business sense.

Unless someone wanted Gavin’s operating company tied to family assets without outside lenders looking too closely.

That was clue number one.

The second arrived from Hazel.

At breakfast the following morning, she held out Stella’s phone.

“Why is Miss Brooke wearing your bracelet?”

Stella looked.

The photograph had been posted after she left the party.

Gavin sat at the center table.

Meredith beside him.

Brooke Dalton on his other side.

Around Brooke’s wrist was a sapphire bracelet Gavin had given Stella after Paige was born.

Stella had not worn it for months.

It had been inside the jewelry drawer in their bedroom.

Then Stella saw Brooke’s hand resting over her stomach.

Meredith’s hand covered it.

The caption read:

SOME FAMILIES JUST KEEP GROWING.

Stella stared at the photograph.

Hazel asked:

“Is she having a baby?”

Stella locked the phone.

“Go help Paige.”

Hazel did not move.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Is Dad getting a new family?”

Stella stood and hugged her.

“I’m still your family.”

Hazel whispered against her shoulder:

“That wasn’t what I asked.”

The front door opened four hours later.

Gavin walked in.

Stella had already packed three suitcases.

He stared at them.

“What is this?”

Stella held out the photograph.

He sighed.

Actually sighed.

“That isn’t how I wanted you to find out.”

“How long?”

“Stella.”

“How long?”

“Ten months.”

Brooke was six months pregnant.

Stella’s voice stayed remarkably steady.

“Is the baby yours?”

“Yes.”

She nodded once.

“The suitcases are yours.”

Gavin stared.

“You’re kicking me out?”

“I’m asking you to leave.”

“The house is half mine.”

“No. The house is marital property and neither of us is resolving that in the hallway. Tonight you’re sleeping somewhere else.”

He gave a bitter laugh.

“There she is.”

“Who?”

“Summit Stella.”

She froze.

He had barely spoken the company’s name inside their home in years.

Gavin continued.

“Everything becomes contracts and control with you.”

“You asked me to hide Summit.”

“I asked you not to humiliate me.”

The room went still.

Gavin realized what he had said.

Stella looked at him.

“So that’s what my success did?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“It is exactly what you meant.”

Then he made it worse.

“Brooke is different.”

“How?”

“She wants the same things I want.”

Stella looked toward the staircase.

“What things?”

Gavin hesitated.

“A son?”

May you like

He looked away.

That was enough.
