Chapter 12 - HAZEL DIDN’T WANT REVENGE

Meredith’s cruelest move came after she realized the courts were no longer listening to her.
She started calling relatives.
She said Stella had manipulated Leah.
She said Thomas was a bitter exile.
She said Summit had engineered Gavin’s financial collapse.
Then she said Hazel had been turned against her father.
That reached Hazel through a cousin during school pickup.
Hazel came home shaking with anger.
“Grandma says you’re making me hate Dad.”
Stella crouched in front of her.
“Do you?”
Hazel burst into tears.
“No.”
Stella pulled her close.
“I know.”
“I want him to be sorry.”
“I know.”
“I want him to come home and be normal again.”
That was the sentence Stella had no power to fix.
She could restore money.
Correct records.
Enforce boundaries.
Hire lawyers.
She could not give her daughter the father Hazel wanted instead of the father Gavin had chosen to become.
A family therapist began seeing the girls.
Not because they were broken.
Because they needed one room where adults did not ask them to manage adult consequences.
Gavin received parenting time under a temporary plan.
Initially structured.
Then gradually less restricted as long as he followed the court’s orders and did not involve Meredith.
The first visit ended after Hazel asked him directly:
“Did you let Grandma take our money because she wanted a boy?”
Gavin apparently told her it was “more complicated.”
Hazel returned home furious.
“Why do grown-ups say complicated when they don’t want to say yes?”
Stella almost laughed.
“Sometimes because they’re scared.”
“Was Dad scared?”
“Yes.”
“Of Grandma?”
“Probably.”
Hazel thought about that.
Then said:
“He should have been more scared of hurting us.”
Stella had no better answer.
Meanwhile Brooke gave birth to a healthy boy.
She named him Owen Dalton.
Not Harrell.
She informed Gavin through attorneys that paternity and support would be handled formally.
She also sent Stella one photograph.
No sentimental message.
Just a sleeping baby.
Stella showed Hazel and Paige.
Paige smiled immediately.
“He’s tiny.”
Hazel stared longer.
“Grandma wanted him instead of us?”
Stella shook her head.
“No. Grandma wanted an idea. Owen is a baby. He didn’t ask to be part of any of this.”
Hazel looked at the photograph again.
“Can I still like him?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
May you like
The cycle was going to end somewhere.
Stella decided it would end with them.
