Chapter 7 - The Formal Notice

Saturday morning, Marisa arrived in person.

Barbara had expected another emotional family meeting. What she got instead was a woman in a navy suit placing a folder on the dining table and speaking in clean, legal sentences.

“Mrs. Whitaker,” Marisa said, “this is formal written notice that any claim you assert to ownership or permanent occupancy of this property is disputed and unsupported by deed, lease, or valid recorded agreement.”

Barbara scoffed. “I live here.”

“Currently,” Marisa replied. “Not permanently.”

Ryan was there again, leaning against the doorway with his jaw tight. Daniel stood beside me. Susan remained seated, hands folded in her lap, composed and pale.

Marisa continued, “If you interfere with closing, contact the buyer, alter any more documents, or attempt to restrict utilities or food access in this residence, additional remedies may include police reports, civil claims, and a petition for expedited removal after closing.”

Barbara’s eyes flashed.

“You are all treating me like a criminal.”

Marisa didn’t blink. “Then stop acting like one.”

I almost smiled.

Barbara snatched the notice and read it with trembling fingers. The fear I had glimpsed before was stronger now. For all her bluster, she had expected family guilt to protect her. Paper from an attorney felt different.

Then she looked straight at Susan.

“This is because of you.”

Daniel stepped forward so fast that even Barbara flinched.

“No,” he said. “This is because of you.”

For the first time all week, I saw him stop being a son and become a husband. Not perfectly. Too late, maybe. But real.

Barbara’s mouth tightened. “After everything I’ve done for this family.”

Ryan let out a bitter laugh. “What exactly was that, Mom? Selling your house and deciding everybody else had to absorb the fallout?”

She turned on him as if betrayed all over again.

That afternoon, she locked herself in her room and refused dinner.

No one begged her to come out.

At 9:00 p.m., Nina texted: Buyer still committed. Wants clean walkthrough Tuesday.

I stared at the words for a long time.

We were closer.

But I still didn’t know why Barbara had sounded so certain from the beginning.

That answer came from an envelope Daniel found hidden in her drawer the next morning.
