Chapter 1 - The Chain Around the Refrigerator

When Barbara came home that evening, she stepped through the front door laughing about something Ryan had said in the driveway.

Then she saw me standing in the kitchen with my phone in my hand, the refrigerator still wrapped in heavy chain, the brass padlock hanging from it like a trophy.

My mother was seated at the table with a glass of ice water in front of her. Daniel stood beside her, one hand on the back of her chair. Ethan was pressed against my side, unusually quiet.

Barbara stopped smiling.

For a second, no one spoke.

Then her eyes moved from the padlock to the breaker panel photo on my phone screen, then to the two notes she had left behind, both laid flat on the table like evidence.

“Oh,” she said lightly. “So Susan has been performing.”

Daniel’s face changed instantly.

“Performing?” he repeated.

Barbara lifted her chin. “She knew perfectly well that food in this house is planned. She always acts so helpless. I was teaching her boundaries.”

My mother lowered her eyes, exactly the way she did whenever someone hurt her and she didn’t want the room to become uglier because of it.

That small movement was what undid me.

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t lunge at Barbara.

I simply turned my phone around and showed Daniel every photograph.

The chained refrigerator.

The switched-off breaker.

The note that said, “Outsiders don’t take anything.”

And the last one, written in thick dark ink:

“This house will belong to my children sooner or later.”

Daniel read it once.

Then again.

When he finally looked up, even Barbara seemed to notice that whatever control she thought she had was beginning to slip.

I said the first sentence calmly.

“You have until tonight to explain why you left my mother in a room with no power and locked food away from her.”

Barbara’s expression hardened.

May you like

And the first words out of her mouth made even Daniel turn pale.

“Maybe now,” she said, “you should tell your wife why I was never worried about getting thrown out in the first place.”
