Chapter 8 - The Baby I Had to Stay Alive For
Before the trust pages arrived, my own body forced the story to pause.
I developed an infection risk in one section of the burn wounds and had to go back into surgery.
The obstetrics team warned that trauma, stress, and anesthesia all created risks for the baby.
I signed consent forms with a hand that barely felt like mine.
“I’m scared,” I told Anna.
“I know.”
“What if I lose him too?”
She leaned close.
“Then it will not be because your body failed.”
I cried harder at that than I had at anything else in the hospital.
For years, Luke had taught me to interpret every loss as biological betrayal.
Anna gave me a different language:
violence,
coercion,
crime.
When I woke from surgery, the first thing I heard was the fetal monitor.
Still there.
Steady.
Dr. Shah squeezed my shoulder.
“You’re both still with us.”
Meanwhile, prosecutors began moving more aggressively.
Luke was charged with felony assault and false statements to medical personnel. The case would likely expand depending on the estate evidence and the review of the prior pregnancy losses.
Evelyn retained separate counsel and called the allegations “the tragic fantasy of an injured woman.”
Then she made a mistake.
She contacted Dr. Keene’s office directly and asked whether “anyone had been foolish enough to preserve the old test results.”
The call was recorded in the office’s standard compliance system.
Detectives obtained it within days.
Luke’s world was tightening.
Mine was slowly widening.
The domestic-violence advocate helped me apply for emergency financial assistance and temporary housing for after discharge.
Anna offered her spare bedroom.
For the first time in years, the future included rooms Luke did not control.
That night, Detective Martinez came back with a sealed envelope from George Lambert’s office.
“We have the missing pages,” she said.
