Chapter 6 - The Sonograms in Evelyn’s Desk

A judge granted a search warrant for the house Luke and I shared after investigators established probable cause for assault and evidence tampering.
Anna was allowed to accompany police during a supervised property inventory because some of my personal documents might be there.
I couldn’t go.
I lay in the hospital bed imagining drawers and closets that had once felt like home being opened by strangers in gloves.
Anna called from the driveway afterward with her voice shaking.
“You need to hear this now.”
Police found my passport in Luke’s desk, along with an old prepaid phone I had never seen and a stack of unopened cards from Anna.
More importantly, they found a locked filing box in Evelyn’s study at the family estate. Luke had a key on his ring.
Inside were copies of my prenatal records, sonogram photos, and three envelopes from a genetic-testing lab.
Each envelope had a sticky note attached in Evelyn’s handwriting:
M
M
M
Male.
There was also a yellow legal pad containing dates beside my pregnancy losses and strange notes like:
must not trigger clause
Luke loses control if issue survives
speak to Keene before Caroline sees anything
I asked Anna to read that last one twice because I thought the medication was distorting my hearing.
“There’s more,” she said.
Beneath the pad was a copy of a family-trust amendment executed by Luke’s late father, Edward Bennett, six months before his death.
The photocopy was incomplete.
Two pages were missing.
But the surviving language mentioned:
first surviving legitimate male issue of Luke Bennett
and
protective voting trust
My heartbeat monitor sped up so quickly the nurse came in to calm me.
I looked at Anna through tears.
“He kept saying he wanted a son.”
Anna’s voice was flat now—the dangerous kind of flat.
“Then why were your test results hidden in his mother’s desk?”
May you like
I already knew the answer lived inside the missing pages.
I just didn’t know how ugly it was yet.
